Job Description
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking motivated law students to join its internship program, offering hands-on experience in federal civil and criminal litigation. Interns will engage in essential legal tasks, including drafting motions, memoranda, and appellate briefs, with exposure to both federal and local court procedures. This program provides a comprehensive introduction to litigation in various practice areas, equipping students with skills and knowledge for a successful legal career.
Responsibilities
Interns will work closely with attorneys and gain hands-on experience in the following areas:
- Drafting responsive and dispositive motions, legal memoranda, and appellate briefs.
- Familiarizing themselves with the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure, Federal Rules of Evidence, and the local rules of the Middle District of Florida.
- Observing court proceedings, attending depositions, and participating in meetings with federal agents.
- Developing an understanding of DOJ practice areas, including:
- Appellate Litigation
- Civil Litigation
- Criminal Litigation
Qualifications
To be eligible for this internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Enrollment: Must be a current law student enrolled in an accredited law school pursuing a Juris Doctor degree.
- Academic Standing: Must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be in good academic standing.
- Citizenship: U.S. citizenship or permanent allegiance to the United States is required.
- Background Check: Successful completion of a background investigation.
Experience
While no prior federal experience is required, applicants should demonstrate:
- Strong academic performance and legal writing skills.
- Interest in federal civil and criminal litigation.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced legal environment with close supervision and guidance.
