Job Description
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) offers a Voluntary Internship Program designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience across various NARA offices, records centers, libraries, and museums. This is an unpaid opportunity beginning the week of January 27 or February 3, 2025, and lasting approximately 12 weeks. Interns must commit to a minimum of 100 hours, working 10 to 40 hours per week, with at least 50% on-site presence.

Responsibilities
Intern responsibilities will vary based on the NARA office or site to which they are assigned. Areas of focus include:

  • Archival Processing
  • Communication & Marketing
  • Digitizing Archival Materials
  • Education & Exhibits
  • Equal Employment Opportunity
  • History and Legislative Support
  • Museum & Public Programs (including at Presidential Libraries)
  • Human Resources, IT, and Facility Operations
  • Records Management and Metadata Development
  • Special Events Coordination

Interns will work with NARA staff on meaningful projects and contribute to NARA’s mission to safeguard federal records. Work schedules are determined collaboratively with supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Current high school, undergraduate, or graduate students or recent graduates (within the past three years).
  • Successful completion of a background check is required.

Experience
Applicants should demonstrate relevant academic and/or practical experience that aligns with their desired area of interest. Preferred candidates will have a strong academic record and a keen interest in records management, museum programs, archival processing, or other focus areas offered by NARA.

Skills

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with archival or museum environments is beneficial.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google Workspace is preferred.

Job Benefits
This internship is unpaid. However:

  • NARA can assist with documentation if students secure outside funding or academic credit.
