The Great Plains Area Indian Health Service (IHS) is offering a Pathways Internship opportunity in the Office of Environmental Health & Engineering. This program allows students in ABET-accredited engineering programs to gain hands-on experience working within IHS facilities, learning field-specific skills, and preparing for future civil service opportunities. This paid internship supports students’ academic and professional growth through a structured, real-world learning experience, with placement available in multiple locations.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and inspect field data under the supervision of an engineering preceptor.
  • Assist in preparing engineering reports on designated projects.
  • Support administrative and engineering-related tasks in day-to-day operations.
  • Participate in data gathering and provide project oversight.

Qualifications

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Educational Requirement: Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited engineering program with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Specific Grade Levels:
    • GS-3: Completion of one full academic year (30 semester/45 quarter hours) of post-high school education.
    • GS-4: Completion of two full academic years (60 semester/90 quarter hours) or possession of an associate’s degree.
    • GS-5: Completion of four full academic years (120 semester/180 quarter hours), leading to a bachelor’s degree.

Experience

  • Relevant paid or unpaid experience, including volunteer work through programs such as the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, is valued and can contribute to meeting qualifications.
  • Interns will gain hands-on experience aligned with their educational goals, with duties directly related to the field of study.

Skills

  • Strong data collection, report preparation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow protocols in engineering data collection and project management.
  • Adaptability in assisting with various field and administrative tasks.
