Job Description
The Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) Internship offers a unique opportunity for second- and third-year law students to gain hands-on experience in federal labor law. As an independent federal agency established under Title VII of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, the FLRA promotes stable, constructive labor-management relations in the federal government. Student volunteers will work alongside attorneys to resolve and prevent labor-management disputes, gaining insight into the rights of employees, unions, and agencies.

Responsibilities
As a Student Volunteer, your tasks may include:

  • Conducting legal research and case evaluation.
  • Assisting in unfair labor practice (ULP) investigations.
  • Supporting union elections and interpreting case law.
  • Preparing reports, disposition letters, and case memorandums.
  • Organizing, analyzing, and managing case files.
  • Providing general administrative support as needed.
  • Presenting oral and written case reports to attorneys and teams.

  1. Addressing complaints of unfair labor practices (ULPs).
  2. Determining and supervising elections for labor representation (REP).
  3. Reviewing exceptions to arbitration awards (ARB).
  4. Addressing legal questions on bargaining duties (NEG).
  5. Resolving impasses in negotiations.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Age 16 or older.
  • Good academic standing.
  • Enrolled at least half-time in an accredited law school.
  • Must maintain student status throughout the volunteer service.
  • Submit transcripts (official or unofficial) and a complete application package.

Experience
Candidates must be current second-year (2L) or third-year (3L) law students, with education from an accredited law school that leads to a professional law degree. Graduates are not eligible for this volunteer position.

Skills

  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to manage and organize case files and provide administrative support.
  • Knowledge of federal labor relations law is a plus but not required.

Job Benefits
This is an unpaid internship, but:

  • Academic credit may be available through your law school upon satisfactory completion.
  • The internship may qualify for a stipend or funding from your law school.
  • Documentation will be provided for academic credit where applicable.
