Job Description

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals (DCCA) offers an unpaid internship with the Appellate Mediation Program, providing law students an opportunity to gain practical experience in appellate mediation. The program facilitates early intervention mediation for various legal matters, including administrative, civil, probate, and family law cases. Interns will support the Mediation Program by assisting with research, training, and mediation coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Learn practical and skills-based aspects of mediation.
  • Attend DCCA-provided mediation training sessions.
  • Conduct research and draft legal memoranda on procedural points of law.
  • Perform docket research and assist in screening cases for mediation suitability.
  • Observe mediation sessions conducted by the court.
  • Attend professional meetings and assist with related projects for the Appellate Mediation Program.

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or authorized to intern in the U.S.
  • Enrollment in an accredited law school program.
  • Commitment of at least 10 hours per week to meet ABA credit requirements.
  • Preferred: Enrollment in or completion of a mediation course, with a strong interest in learning about mediation.

Experience

  • Prior coursework or experience in mediation is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse court personnel and clients, aligning with DCCA values of Accountability, Excellence, Fairness, Integrity, Respect, and Transparency.

  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Interest in developing mediation techniques and understanding court procedures.
